INFORMATION
This
booklet is presented as a source of information about the courses of study and
the enrollment procedures of the school.
Students,
parents, and advisors are asked to study the requirements, recommendations, and
courses described in this booklet.
A bit of study now will make possible a smooth enrollment for each
student and a profitable school year.
The
courses listed in this booklet are tentative offerings for the next academic
year.
An
enrollment form will be made available with this booklet. Consult with your parents or guardians
and complete the form as instructed.
The courses you select now during enrollment are used to determine
teaching assignments.
Because of this, any enrollment or schedule change will require a
counselor conference and administrative approval.

Accreditation
Tonganoxie
High School is accredited through the Quality Performance Accreditation process
by the Board of Education of the State of Kansas.
Minimum
Graduation Requirements
A
minimum of twenty six (26) units of credit are required for graduation.
Thirteen (13) of these units are required by the Kansas State Department of
Education and Tonganoxie High School.

The
remaining courses are elective, to be selected by the student, which will best
suit his/her present and future needs.
Tonganoxie
High School has a seven period day.
All students must enroll in seven units of credit and must attend eight
semesters unless enrolled in special programs such as vocational/technical
training or college courses during the senior year. A unit of credit is defined as the amount of credit given
upon completion of a course meeting one (1) period per day each day for an
entire school year.
Note: Beginning with the class of 2009, The
following courses are required by the Kansas State Department of Education and
Tonganoxie High School.

Attendance/Enrollment Requirements
The
following changes have been made in the guidelines for enrollment and
attendance.
1. Seniors
in the 8th semester who dual enroll in college courses away from THS must
follow the enrollment guidelines of the KSHSAA in order to fulfill the eighth semester
attendance requirement. A student
must be enrolled in at least one class at THS and the college equivalent of
four more high school classes.
2. Students
who want college credit courses to apply toward their high school
graduation
requirements may ask that only science, math, language arts or the social
sciences be applied.
3. Students
may graduate after the 7th semester if they have met all course
requirements. Such students may participate in
graduation ceremonies but must notify the school of their intention to do so
immediately following the completion of their classes.
Valedictorian/Salutatorian
Requirements
Tonganoxie High
School honors one student from the graduating class as valedictorian and one as
salutatorian. These students shall
have demonstrated high academic performance
in the acquisition of knowledge, intellectual skill, and respect for the ideas
and values of our culture.
The
valedictorian shall be the student
with the highest grade point average among those graduates who have
completed the required courses for the Kansas Board of Regents State
Scholarship. They are as follows:

Candidates for
valedictorian must also complete three of the following courses: English IV Honors, AP Chemistry, Biology II, AP Calculus,
Spanish IV, Accounting II, or Advanced Computers.
In the event of
a tie when computing the grade point average and all course requirements have
been met, the valedictorian will be determined by the highest comprehensive
score on the ACT test (American College Testing Program). The student with the second highest ACT
score will be salutatorian.

Beginning
the fall semester of 2001, students applying for admission to any of the six
Kansas Regents universities must meet certain criteria for admission. New freshmen must meet one of the
following requirements:
*Complete
the pre college curriculum with at least a 2.0 grade point average
on a 4.0 scale;
*Achieve
an ACT score of 21 or above; or
*Rank
in the top one-third of the high school graduating
class.
Precollege
curriculum:

must successfully complete one year of US History, one-half year of US
Government and one-half year selected from world history, psychology,
sociology or
economics.

science and at least two years of a foreign language.

Accelerated High School Programs
Honors English
Freshmen,
Sophomores and Juniors may enroll in an Honors English class if they have a
3.25 GPA, made an ÒAÓ in three of the past four quarters in English and/or
score 85% on a standardized achievement test. These classes will be fast paced with an emphasis on
writing, grammar and analytical thinking.
Dual Credit College Courses
Students
have the opportunity to enroll in duel credit courses and earn credits for high
school and college. THS and Kansas
City Kansas Community College are in partnership to offer these courses to
students who pass the Accuplacer with a certain score. Students are responsible for all fees
and textbook costs. Both are set
by KCKCC. Students have the
opportunity to earn college credit in classes taught by THS faculty and
graduate with a significant number college credit hours which are transferable
to most Kansas Regents schools.
Online Courses,
KCKCC
THS Seniors
or IEP students who are looking for educational opportunities beyond the
available curriculum at THS may be able to enroll into an online course through
Kansas City, Kansas Community College.
Students may take this course entirely independent of their school day
or they may elect to schedule an hour of their school day to work on their
online course. The KCKCC course
may be eligible for dual credit at KCKCC and THS with approval from the
principal.
Interested
students need to qualify for enrollment by scoring at the appropriate level on
the KCKCC placement exam and receiving permission from the THS principal. THS students will need to complete all
KCKCC enrollment procedures and pay for any necessary tuition, class books,
materials or other associated costs with the course. Students should visit with a THS counselor before enrolling.

is designed for the students who can make use of extra help with homework,
daily assignments, studying for tests,
reviewing for finals, improving basics skills, etc. The teacher will work closely with the
student and other instructors to help insure student success in academic
courses. Students must have the recommendation
of a math or language arts teacher or counselor to enroll in this class. Complete the enrollment form as
directed and have it signed by one of the above.

identify various literary elements.
Students will continue to develop the skills of sentence and paragraph

This course
expands on the six traits of writing - conventions, ideas and content, word
choice, sentence fluency, voice, and organization. Students will be given the
opportunity to learn and/or review the standards and practices of academic
research and literary analysis. A
broad survey of global literature will be provided, as well as reading
comprehension enrichment using current events, short fiction, and
student-generated work

This class
provides a self-directed grammar study with application of grammar skills
provided through sentence revision exercises. A wide variety of literature is read with an emphasis on
themes and making Òreal worldÓ connections to the literature. Research skills, the writing process,
discussion of literature, and vocabulary study are all important components of
Honors English.

In English
III, significant themes , trends and authors in American Literature are
discussed. In composition, the
emphasis is placed on expanding the studentÕs knowledge of different methods of
paragraph development and on writing informative and persuasive essays. A comprehensive study of grammar is an
essential aspect of this course.
Oral and visual communication skills and vocabulary development are also
stressed.

English III Year
Course

This course
will examine and critically analyze American literature and the effects of
cultures and time periods on these writings. Along with the literature, will be a strong emphasis on
writing to analyze, persuade, explain, and inform. To assist in enhancing writing skills, a monitored,
independent study of grammar and vocabulary will accompany this course.

IV emphasis is placed on composition skills as they apply to essay writing,
creative writing, and the research paper.
The literacy focus will be world literature with an emphasis on British
authors. Plays, novels, short
stories, poems, and essays of various authors of the world are presented to the

teaches written communication applicable to business and industry. It will provide students with skills

semester course which provides a thought-provoking format for learning about
three popular thematic forms of literature: science fiction (the impact of real or imagined science on

will focus on critical reading and writing, vocabulary study, as well as
thoughtful examination of literary selections.

This is a
course that allows students to explore poetry, prose, short stories, and other
genres of literature. Special
emphasis will be placed on reading and evaluating examples of each of these. Students will learn methods of planning
for and producing original works, as well as utilizing rubrics and multiple
drafts to improve the final product. Grammar and usage are major components of this course,
as well as a study in lliterary terms used in creative writing. Students will have the opportunity to
enter writing in various competitions.

This course
takes a student-centered approach to creative writing, offering a range of
strategies to help students develop as writers, and encouraging them to value
their own resources of memory, observation and voice. The emphasis is highly practical, with exercises and
activities designed to ignite and sustain the writing impulse. The course will also show students how
to publish their work.
