Inclement Weather

Kansas weather is often unpredictable. USD 464 approaches inclement weather decisions with safety as our primary concern. We consider information from several sources to help us reach each decision, including:
Road conditions for bus travel and student and staff drivers;
Weather forecasts;
Assessments by law enforcement, emergency management agencies, and other government entities
Assessments by our internal road conditions assessment team
The Superintendent usually makes the decision to close school by 5:30 a.m. after checking road conditions and weather forecasts across the district and consulting with our internal team of assessment drivers and local emergency management officials. Closings are seldom announced the evening prior to the school day. If school is canceled, all morning activities and practices are also canceled. Decisions regarding afternoon and evening activities and practices will be made by the Superintendent on a case-by-case basis.
Once the school day begins, classes are rarely dismissed early due to the challenges of notifying parents and the difficulties that working parents face in arranging early pickups.
A two-hour delay may be utilized when conditions are expected to improve to such a point as to allow safe travel for students and staff. When two-hour delays are called, all buildings will open two hours later than normal. All morning activities, practices, and the morning session of preschool are canceled. YMCA Y-Care Club at TES will open at 8:30 am on two-hour delay days.
During inclement weather, parents and staff are encouraged to check the Tonganoxie USD 464 website at www.tong464.org or the district social media pages for the most up-to-date information. Once the decision is made, these sites will be updated first, and key USD 464 personnel including transportation and maintenance supervisors, principals and other supervisors will be notified. The district utilizes SchoolStatus Connect, our parent notification system, to communicate with families based on their notification preferences.
