The new Brave Buddies program is bridging the gap between high school and elementary students, offering mutual growth, learning, and support. Modeled as an internship, Braves Buddies allows high school students to dedicate part of their school day to working at Tonganoxie Elementary School, where they assist teachers and work closely with younger students. They receive weekly participation points, write reflections on their experiences, and are evaluated by their mentor teacher at the end of each semester. From guiding students through reading and math challenges to helping manage classroom behavior, Brave Buddies play an essential role in fostering a positive learning environment.
THS senior and USD 464 marketing intern Sawyer Frese recently sat down with two participants, seniors Emma Schmidt and Alexis Gonzales, to learn about their experiences and the impact of the program.
Emma, who has worked with children through the YMCA since she was 16, shared how the program aligns with her passion:
“I…started looking into programs at the school that work with kids because I knew I wanted to work with kids…Mrs. George brought up the Brave Buddies program. My experience has been really positive. I’ve gotten to work with each kid individually, see how they are developing…I get to read to them a lot and they read to me. I even get to help with behavioral challenges too with my mentor guiding me.”
For Alexis, the program serves as a stepping stone toward her future career goals:
“I want to be an elementary school teacher, so I met with Mrs. George because I was wondering how I could get experience in the actual classroom…she said that Braves Buddies was how you could watch and see how the teacher interacts with students.”
When asked if they would recommend Brave Buddies to other students, their responses were overwhelmingly positive:
“Do it,” Emma said. “It is so much fun being here. The students love seeing you every day, and I think it makes a positive impact on them…It also helps the teacher…and gives you the experience of what it’s like to be in the classroom.
Alexis added, “It’s my favorite part of my day. Even on days I don’t want to go to school…I get here and they’re all excited to see you and it just boosts my mood.”
The Brave Buddies program prepares students for future careers in education, supports our district-wide Strategic Goal of Student Excellence and Accountability, and showcases the power of mentorship, hands-on learning, and the joy of building connections across grade levels.
